Bioengineered Mosquitoes to Fight Dengue

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego, Tata Institute of Genetics & Society, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have genetically engineered a strain of mosquitoes that can effectively fight the dengue virus. The mechanism of action involves the expression of an antibody. When female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes take in blood, a specific type of antibody gets synthesized. This antibody is able to block the replication of the dengue virus. The expressed antibody efficiently combats four different strains of the deadly dengue virus. According to the World Health Organization, the dengue virus threatens millions of people across the globe. This groundbreaking research has been published in the journal PLOS Pathogens. Future work includes genetically engineering mosquitoes to fight the Zika, Yellow fever, and Chikungunya viruses.

TED Talks in 2 Min. | E-Depression

An insightful video on why our screens (smartphones, laptops, etc.) make us feel miserable.

Video transcript: Why do screens make us miserable? Here’s the key reason: Zero “stopping cues.” A stopping cue tells us when to stop. Non-screen activities have stopping cues. But social media has infinite feeds and scrolls. In 2017, we spent 200% more time online than we did in 2007. We are now addicted to our screens. Visit any restaurant. You will notice that people type more and talk less. Teens study less and watch more p0rn. Adults use it for meaningless chatter. People make and break relationships on social media. Isn’t that hilarious? We get depressed after getting fewer likes. At musical concerts, we digitally document. While on vacation, we post. We feel haunted by the fear of being left out. Clearing notifications helps us relax. We need to end this. Sooner the better! The fix is really easy. Use social media for a short duration every day. Stay away from screens while having, food, bath, or sex. Sounds funny? It ain’t! Don’t treat the screen as a part of your body. Spend more time on meaningful activities. This will make you happy.

TED Talks in 2 Min. | Edit Your Life Story

Wish to virtually guarantee professional success? Install a new life narrative. Edit and rewrite your life story. Why let anonymous authors draft an unacceptable script for you? Based on two popular TED talks (https://lnkd.in/fUPUTsY & https://lnkd.in/fXX8YtJ).

Video transcript:

Edit your life story to become successful. Many people live lives based on scripts written by others, even if they are wrong. That’s why most people worry and regret. We unknowingly transform into story characters who are at the mercy of unknown authors. We need to stop this. We need to ban all unknown authors from our lives and install a new narrative. The fix is really simple. Just recalibrate and shift your emotional center of gravity. Be the author of your own story. Make the narrative sexy and interesting. Edit the silly stuff and amplify the good stuff. Happiness and sorrow are not two sides of the same coin. Our brain is equipped to amplify happiness and to trash sorrow. It’s not difficult at all to synthesize happiness.

TED Talks in 2 Min. | Leadership

Popular TED Talks simplified and explained in less than 2 minutes. This video covers the TED Talk by Simon Sinek on successful leadership.

Video transcript:

Trying to sell stuff? Ask yourself the question “why.” The answer better be impressive. If it’s not, then change your “why.” Find a better “why.” Why did you design this new product? Does it address a gap? Does it fix something or does it simply imitate? Apple sold its products by having a unique “why.” So what was Apple’s “why”? Apple believes in thinking differently and in challenging the status quo through its amazing innovations and world-class designs. Successful leaders always have a fantastic “why.” People who agree with this “why” get inspired and follow. Over 250,000 believers gathered for King Martin Luther’s speech, not because they liked him, but because they liked his “why.” What is your “why” story? Do share it with us today.

BPA Toxicity & Pregnant Women

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a deadly (but common) plastic additive that can trigger a variety of serious ailments in both infants and adults. According to Spanish researchers, pregnant women exposed to higher levels of BPA are more likely to give birth to children who suffer from wheezing and poorer lung function [1]. BPA is a known hormonal disruptor, as evident from a large number of published studies highlighting this fact. Hormonal (or endocrine) disruptors alter important biological systems such as the immune and respiratory systems. As part of this study, female volunteers were asked to provide urine samples. These were then tested for the presence of BPA. Researchers at the Barcelona Institute of Global Health were shocked to discover detectable levels of BPA in most (79%) of the collected urine samples. Most shockingly, a two-fold increase in the BPA levels was associated with a 5 mL decrease in the lung capacity of the offspring. Scientists across the globe agree that there should be tighter regulation on and stricter legislation against known (and suspected) biological agents. According to the Mayo Clinic [2], BPA is commonly found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, both of which are used in the industrial manufacturing of bottles, food cans, etc.  BPA can seriously damage vital organs such as the brain or the prostate gland.

Are you still microwaving your food in plastic dishes/plates/vessels? Are you still drinking tea in plastic (or Styrofoam) cups? Would you like to share this extremely critical research update on BPA with your family members and friends? Would you like to contribute to the information above? Please make sure you comment below and share this with your network on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Do come back for research updates that matter.
